I went over my predictions for who will win at the Game Awards in Sunday’s video so let’s run through a few pie in the sky predictions for what we might see in the way of announcements at the show itself (as well as at the PlayStation Experience a couple days later).
1. Final Fantasy VII – The game has been dark since PSX 2015. I’m sure it’s also still quite a ways away but they’ve hopefully made a lot of progress on the remake in these last two years. Perhaps it’ll return to PSX with an update.
2. God of War Trailer and Release Date (March 22nd) – The God of War series historically releases in March (in honor of the Roman God of War Mars) and I think we’ll get confirmation that the trend will continue. Just today, the PSN listing for the game’s pre-order shows March 22nd so it wouldn’t surprise me if somebody accidentally made that update public in advance of an announcement at the show this weekend.
3. Another Death Stranding trailer, dated for 2019 – With Hideo Kojima, Guillermo del Toro, and Norman Reedus confirmed for the Game Awards, we might as well just refer to it as the Death Stranding show. Obviously, Geoff Keighley has a great affection for Kojima and this project so I think it will get a notable showcase and our first new trailer since last year’s Game Awards. And then they’ll shock everyone by putting an ambitious 2019 on the screen (even though it’ll probably be pushed to 2021).
4. Kingdom Hearts 3 Trailer – We haven’t seen anything from Kingdom Hearts 3 since the D23 Toy Story trailer in July. The game has been dated for 2018 so I think the Game Awards or PSX are the perfect time to show another new world off.
5. Patapon 2 Remastered – Greg Miller’s love of the Patapon franchise is well-documented. The Patapon Remaster was announced at last year’s PSX, alongside a Loco Roco Remaster. Loco Roco 2 Remaster has already been announced and will be released Saturday. I think during Friday night’s interview, Shuhei Yoshida will tell Greg his wishes are coming true and Patapon 2 will be available as well (either as an “it’s out now” announcement or alongside Loco Roco 2 on Saturday).
