The Game Awards Live-Blog

I’m gonna attempt a live-blog of The Game Awards with my predictions matched up against the actual winners. I’ll also give impressions on any other highlights of the night. So keep checking back…

Best Family Game. My Pick: LEGO Dimensions. Winner: Super Mario Maker. (0/1)

Best Fighting Game. My Pick: Mortal Kombat X. Winner: Mortal Kombat X. (1/2)

Wasn’t too focused on the Pre-Show, but I did enjoy seeing a lot of friendly industry faces in the nominee packages.

Up first in the show proper, Camilla Luddington from Tomb Raider to present…

Best Multiplayer. My Pick: Destiny: The Taken King. Winner: Splatoon. (1/3)

Definitely misjudged that one, figuring a more traditional one would take it.

Best Mobile/Handheld Game. My Pick: Lara Croft GO. Winner: Lara Croft GO. (2/4)

Wow. Keighley is really taking to heart the comments from last year’s show about it dragging on. 10 minutes in and we’ve already got 4 awards and a new premiere for Uncharted 4, highlighting a new character, played by Laura Bailey according to Twitter.

Shaq shows up with trailer for Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn. Personally I think they missed an opportunity by not calling it Shaq Tu but to each his own.

ESports Team of the Year. My Pick: N/A. Winner: Optic Gaming. (Still 2/4)

ESports Player of the Year. My Pick: N/A. Winner: Going to quick I missed it.

ESports Game of the Year. My Pick: N/A. Winner: Counter Strike GO

Most Anticipated Game. My Pick: Horizon Zero Dawn. Winner: No Man’s Sky. (2/5)

That No Man’s Sky hype isn’t going anywhere apparently. Congrats to that team!

Big reveal of the night so far: a new Telltale game focusing on Batman. That’ll be fun. Wonder how far out it is? My guess is Holiday 2016 (following the Game of Thrones/Tales from the Borderlands announcement to release schedule from a couple years ago).

Best Narrative. My Pick: Tales from the Borderlands. Winner: Her Story. (2/6)

I’ve heard a lot of great stuff about Her Story, I’ll have to check it out.

Far Cry Primal trailer. Definitely looks like Far Cry. Even appears to have small outpost-like encampments. With everything else moving from February, I’ll probably be picking it up as my pre-Uncharted 4 game.

Churches music break = puppy potty break.

Come back inside to a LEGO Marvel Avengers ad, which I know Catherine and I will be enjoying for another round of Co-op with Catherine.

Trending Gamer. My Pick: Greg Miller. Winner: Greg Miller (Fuck yes/7).

Great, great, great fucking speech, Greg! Thank you!

And apparently Notch is financing Psychonauts 2 after all. 😉

Sorry, I missed what happened the last couple minutes to favorite all of the Greg Miller wins tweets I could find.

Best Independent Game. My Pick: Rocket League. Winner: Rocket League. (4/8)

Best Sports/Racing Game. My Pick: Rocket League. Winner: Rocket League. (5/9)

New trailer for Quantum Break. I feel like I don’t know anything about this game. I’ve seen it for years but none of it is sticking.

Touching video tribute for Iwata-san. I wonder how many other unsung heroes we lost this year.

Reggile Fils-Aime knocking out another beautiful tribute for a legend in the industry.

Games for Impact. My Pick: Life is Strange. Winner: Life is Strange. (6/10)

Best Fan Creation. My Pick: N/A. Winner: Portal Stories

Developer of the Year. My Pick: CD Projekt Red. Winner: CD Projekt Red. (7/11)

Rock Band VR seems like a no-brainer so I can’t figure how why I hadn’t thought of it as a possibility. Wonder if it’ll pick up steam.

Phil Spencer giving out the award for Art Direction almost certainly means it’s going to Ori, right?

Best Art Direction. My Pick: Ori and the Blind Forest. Winner: Ori and the Blind Forest. (8/12)

Would’ve been really weird if Phil Spencer had to hand that award over to Bloodborne.

Shadow Complex Remastered. Awesome! I look forward to picking this one up now!

Westwood Studios winning the Industry Icon award makes me miss all the RTS Games I played growing up. I would love to get back in the genre.

Rocket League is coming to Xbox One as was leaked earlier in the week.

Mark Hamill makes a joke about not being on the poster for Star Wars. Awesome!

Best Action/Adventure. My Pick: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Winner: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. (9/13)

Keifer Sutherland accepts the award and Keighley tells the crowd that Kojima-san basically was told he couldn’t attend. Ouch. There’s no way Konami wins this PR battle. Not letting the creator of the game accept the award. #FucKonami

Best Score/Soundtrack. My Pick: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Winner: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. (10/14)

Best Performance. My Pick: Ashly Burch as Chloe Price (Life is Strange). Winner: Viva Seifert (Her Story) (10/15).

I clearly need to check out this game.

Game of the Year. My Pick: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Winner: The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. (10/16)

Did not see Witcher taking it but I’m not mad. That was a great game and well worthy of the title.

And now for the categories I apparently missed (although I think there were some flubs by announcers).

Best Role Playing Game. My Pick: Fallout 4. WinnerThe Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt(?)

Hidden in there with the Game of the Year award I think.

Best Shooter. My Pick: Destiny: The Taken King. Winner: Splatoon?

I think when they announced Splatoon winning Best Multiplayer they said Splatoon won Best Multiplayer also but I think that was supposed to be Shooter.

So that drops me back down to 10/18 awards. I got more than half right so I’ll take it.
